Check Presentation Speech by Brian Detrick :
Good afternoon,
My name is Brian Detrick. I am the event director for the Elk Grove Mayors’ Fittest of Elk Grove Competition.
For those of you who may not be familiar with this event, I would like to give you a brief background.
In 2010, the event was founded by Charlie Zamora of WarriorZ Health & Fitness. The 1st Annual was a single event in a parking lot of a strip mall with 15 athletes, 4 vendors and 50 spectators.
This year in 2011, I took over as the event director for the 2nd Annual. There were 3 qualifiers that led up to the finals which were held at the elk grove high school stadium. At the finals alone, we had 51 athletes, approximately 30 vendors and 400 spectators. You could walk around and get the latest information on nutrition, talk to gyms, chiropractors, dentists, grocery stores, vitamin shops, hospitals and business that specialized in organic food. You could have had your face painted or even played in the jump house. To feed your appetite, you had a choice of smoked tri-tip or chicken sandwiches.
Next year in 2012 – we are expanding the event for all ages. We will have 3 divisions, 7 and under, 18-39 and 40 and up. Heck, even the mayor could compete.
Last year, Mayor Detrick lent his name to the event, this year, Mayor Detrick and Vice Mayor Cooper lent their name to the event and we hope to have the mayor, vice mayor and city council members lend their name to the event next year.
As many of you may or may not know, I grew up with youth sports here in elk grove such as soccer, baseball, football, track, basketball and water skiing. With that foundation, it has taken me to where I am today. Currently a professional water skier ranked approximately 25th in the world. This coming January, I will represent the United States at the University World Championships on the 6 member university team in Santiago, Chile.
I wanted to give back to my community by helping boys and girls that do not have the means and opportunities that I was fortunate to grow up with. My goal for this event was to raise $10,000 for the Elk Grove Youth Sports Foundation. I am pleased to announce, not only did I meet that goal, but I exceeded it, by bring in not 10, not 11, but $12,000. This will fund over 100 scholarships for underprivileged youth in our community.
Mayor Detrick, Vice Mayor Cooper, will you please join me in presenting the check to Gary Davis, President of the Elk Grove Youth Sports Foundation and their Board of Directors.
The 2011 Elk Grove Mayors’ 2nd Annual Fittest of Elk Grove Competition was held last Sunday at the Elk Grove High School Stadium. Our title sponsor was Gil Moore Oil and the event benefited the Elk Grove Youth Sports Foundation. There were 3 qualifying events that led to the finals of this 4 part series of events. Sunday showcased the athletes who qualified for the Finals of the Fittest of Elk Grove Competition (Male, Female & Team (2 men & 2 women) Divisions), a Health & Wellness Fair and the WarriorZ Throwdown ((teams – 1 man & 1 women) (exhibition of the top CrossFit athletes in northern CA. Many competed in the World Games a few weeks ago in southern CA. ) )
The 1st Annual was a single event in a parking lot of a strip mall with 15 athletes, 4 vendors and 50 spectators. This year’s event had 51 athletes, approximately 30 vendors and 400 spectators. You could walk around and get the latest information on nutrition, talk to gyms, chiropractors, dentists, grocery stores, vitamin shops, hospitals, business that specialized in organic food and healthy juice. You could have even gotten your face painted or played in the jump house. To feed your appetite, you had a choice of a smoked tri-tip or chicken sandwich, a fruit bowl and water or Gatorade.
With temperatures over 100 degrees, athletes competed in three separate workouts that ranged from running to back squats, farmers walk, kettle bell swings, an 8 bar dead lift ladder, sand bag lunge from 50-100 yards and moving weight from the ground to over your head.

Pull ups have to have straight arms and chin above the bar, doesn’t matter how you pull yourself up.
Qualifying Team Workout #1
-Each team must choose 2 members to lift 15,000 total pounds from ground to overhead. This can be done in one of three denominations:
150 lb x 100 reps
100 lb x 150 reps
75 lb x 200 reps One bar per team and you can get it up anyway you would like. When bar is over head, you must lock out both arms. The bar has to touch the ground every time.
Immediately following the completion of 15,000 lbs from ground to overhead, the other 2 team members will complete a 1 mile run (each person runs a mile). Lowest total time would win the workout.
Qualifying Team Workout #2
4 stations that each team member would rotate through for 1 minute of max effort.
-handstand hold against a wall (measured in seconds)
-box jumps (24 – men / 16 – women) (measured in reps)
-pull ups (measured in reps)
-front squat to push press (95 – men/65 – women) (measured in reps)
After a full round 1 minute rest will be given and then they repeat 2 more times. 1 round consists of each team member doing all four stages. Each team member does each station 3 times.
Pull ups have to have straight arms and chin above the bar, doesn’t matter how you pull yourself up.
For the handstands it will be a sum time. So the judge will start the stopwatch when they’re up and stop it when they fall. If they get back up again the clock re-starts. When the next team member gets to the wall, the clock starts again. etc.
